Griya Schizofren: Illuminating Paths to Mental Health and Empathy
Mental health is invisible, but it's a very real issue. Coco Gauff
In the bustling heart of Solo, Indonesia, the story of three sociology students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) unfolds as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and dedication. Triana Rahmawati, Febrianti Dwi Lestari, and Wulandari embarked on a remarkable journey that has changed the lives of hundreds facing mental health challenges. They are the visionary founders of Griya Schizofren, a community that stands as a beacon of hope and understanding for those touched by mental health issues.
Their journey began within the confines of UNS, where they participated in the Community Service Student Creativity Program. Driven by a desire to approach mental health issues through a sociological lens, they chose to serve at Griya PMI, a local center for individuals with mental health challenges. What started with just ten students soon expanded as they visited, interacted, and empathized with these individuals three to four times a week. This connection ultimately led to the birth of Griya Schizofren in October 2014.
Griya Schizofren: A Sanctuary for Souls
To date, Griya Schizofren has extended its loving embrace to over 200 individuals within and beyond Solo. Their approach transcends mere support; it encompasses the families of those affected. Activities span a wide spectrum - from conversations and daily routines to singing, drawing, origami, communal prayers, and even shared meals during Ramadan. As Triana Rahmawati, the founder, articulates, "We want to give them the feeling that they are not alone in their struggle. We want them to feel accepted and loved, not shunned or stigmatized."
